Wasabi Direct Connect (WDX)

Securely transfer your data at high speeds.

Wasabi Direct Connect (WDX) offers a private, direct connect service that enables you to establish a direct network connection between your network (on-premise or alternative data location) and a Wasabi storage region (also referred to as data centers). WDX uses an Ethernet connection to provide an alternative way to connect to Wasabi without using the public internet.

WDX offers several direct connect service options to connect to Wasabi at high transfer rates (1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and 100 Gbps) and with added security.

WDX Service Options

WDX offers two options for private network connectivity:

  • Dedicated: Provides a direct, private connection provisioned exclusively from your data center to any of Wasabi's global storage regions.

  • Hosted: Provides a direct, private connection provisioned from your on-premise data center or cloud service provider (CSP), through a hosted network provider (also referred to as cloud fabric partner) and shared partner port, to a Wasabi storage region. Using our supported Recommended Cloud-to-Cloud Migration Tools, direct connect services can be provided through the following hosted network providers:

    • Megaport Direct Connect

    • Equinix Direct Connect (ECX)

    • Flexential Hosted Services

The following table offers a comparison of each service option:

WDX Dedicated

WDX Hosted

Description

A physical, private network connection connecting your data center or colocation facility directly to Wasabi.

A logical network connection provisioned through a cloud fabric partner and a shared partner port.

Port Ownership

  • Exclusive (customer-owned)

  • Physical circuit with full bandwidth

  • Shared (provider-owned)

  • Virtual circuit with assigned bandwidth

  • A physical cross-connect is required between your organization and the provider’s network

Circuit Type

Physical

Logical/virtual

Deployment Time

Longer (requires physical cross-connect)

Faster (logical provisioning through partner)

Bandwidth Options

Fixed bandwidth speeds of 1 Gbps/10 Gbps/100 Gbps

Flexible, logical bandwidth speeds of 1 Gbps/10 Gbps (increments of 1 Gbps up to 5 Gbps)

Scalability

Scale by upgrading the physical port

Scale by changing the logical bandwidth tier

Use Cases

  • Large data sets

  • Consistent workloads

  • Predictable performance

  • Colocation environment

  • Maximum network isolation

Responsibility

Wasabi:

  • Allocates the dedicated network port for your selected Wasabi storage region and manages the Wasabi-side configuration (known as the A Side).

  • Provides a standard letter of authorization (LOA) to the customer and/or service provider, defining the port location to be used.

Wasabi:

  • Establishes a network link with a hosted direct connect partner.

  • Provides connectivity between the partner’s cloud fabric network and Wasabi’s customer network interfaces. This hosted connection is used by Wasabi to provide individual virtual cross-connects (VXC) from your source to the Wasabi region for the storage services offered.

Customer:

  • Arranges the physical connection between your router and Wasabi’s equipment using the Wasabi-issued LOA. The provider may have to issue an LOA to their service provider partners to establish the co-location facility’s cross-connect services. This scenario sometimes involves multiple cross-connect connection points to get to the Wasabi LOA designation.

Customer:

  • Sets up connectivity between the on-premises environment (customer data center source) and the Wasabi cloud fabric partner.

  • Obtains membership to the selected cloud fabric partner (along with network connectivity to that network) before Wasabi can properly provision the VXC for the service.

Amazon Direct Connect (AWS Direct Connect)

Wasabi supports Amazon Direct Connect (AWS Direct Connect) services from an AWS account to Wasabi. WDX and AWS Direct Connect are private line connectivity services that provide a Dedicated or Hosted network connection from your premises to the CSP storage network.

Wasabi provides a stable, private path to the Wasabi storage region once the traffic meets the WDX environment. Wasabi manages:

  • WDX port and handoff (Dedicated or Hosted)

  • Wasabi edge routers and virtual LAN (VLAN) assignment

  • Border gateway protocol (BGP) configuration on the Wasabi side

  • Routing within the Wasabi private backbone to your chosen Wasabi storage region

  • Network performance and security on the Wasabi side

You are responsible for:

  • Ordering and maintaining the AWS Direct Connect connection

  • Setting up the virtual interface (VIF) and routing policies to ensure that traffic destined for Wasabi travels over DX, not over the Internet

A shared boundary (shown as a meet_me_point in the reference model example below) is the point where your AWS Direct Connect and WDX paths meet.

your_AWS_resources——your_responsibility——meet_me_point——Wasabi_responsibility——Wasabi_storage_region

Depending on the connection model, the shared boundary can be a co-location cross-connect point (such as Equinix DC) or a virtual, exchange fabric partner (such as Flexential, Megaport, and so on).

Wasabi Interconnect

Interconnected services leverage high-speed connections between your data center locations (on-premises or in the cloud) and Wasabi. For more detail about Wasabi’s interconnect partners, refer to Connecting With Wasabi Interconnect.

Common Use Scenarios and Pricing

The Wasabi Direct Connect product page lists many of the ways that you can use WDX and includes information on features and Pricing FAQs for all Wasabi Pricing Models.

Due to the network provisioning and other setup costs associated with WDX, Wasabi requires a minimum 12-month term for using WDX.
